Maharani Club

Maharani clubThe House of Patiala was well known for its patronage of the royal game of cricket. The rulers themselves were outstanding cricketers and great lovers of the game. They brought Patiala on the world map of cricket and developed it to be nursery of keen and energetic cricketers. It was Maharaja Rajindra Singh who was a pioneer among the Indian princes to take the game in the right earnest. Although only 14 years of age the young Maharaja showed great zeal and aptitude for the game of cricket. The Maharaja and his young brother, Raja Ranbir Singh use to take up there positions as to rival captions on the joyous field, eager to inflict defeat on the other. The ground on which Maharaja Rajindra Singh used to play matches was very close to the Rajindra Palace. After the completion of the Cricket Pavillion, Maharaja Rajindra Singh, established a regular club of Cricket and named it ‘PATIALA CRICKET CLUB’. The activities of the cricket club were looked after by Col. K.M.Mistri and other prominent coaches. In 1920, more sports were added in the club activities. In 1923, the Cricket Club’s name was changed into R.G.C.C. (Rajindra Gymkhana Cricket Club). During Maharaja Bhupindra Singh’s reign many foreign teams visited India and the ruler saw to it that they played a match in Baradari Grounds. It was only in this magnificent ground that many of the visiting foreign teams met their waterloo. He was also acclaimed as British Empire’s leading cricketer in 1911. After the creation of PEPSU in 1956, when Maharaja Yadavindra Singh was made the Raj Parmukh of PEPSU, this building was converted into Rajindra Gymkhana & Mahindra Club under the stewardship of Royal family of Patiala, which is still carried on. The games like table tennis, badminton, swimming pool is available for the members of the club.

NISNetaji Subhas National Institute of Sports, Patiala India which is also Asia's largest Sports Institute is housed in the palatial monumental building and sprawling lawns built by the erstwhile Maharaja of Patiala whose descendants dedicated this complex for the promotion of sports to the people of India. This Institute is popularly known as the "Mecca" of Indian Sports and has produced Coaches of high caliber and significantly contributed in rendering their expertise and assistance in the preparation of the national teams for various International competitions. Housed in the erstwhile Palace of Maharaja (King) of Patiala (Punjab), National Institute of Sports, which is now the Academic Wing of the Sports Authority of India was established by the Government of India on 7th May, 1961 with the objective of developing sports in the country on Scientific lines and to train the Coaches in different sports disciplines. The Institute was renamed as Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NSNIS) on 23rd January, 1973. The Institute is housed in an area of 268 acres. The Institute has enormous facilities for academic programmes & sports training and 4 hostels for the comfortable stay of the students, national players and coaches. The Institute is having 115 rooms which houses the office, library, museum, class rooms & staff club. One Guest House with lounge & conference hall is situated in the Institutes green belt. Department of Sports Medicine is providing all medical assistance to the players, students and staff. The sports training facilities are of international standard comprising of Gymnasium, Swimming Pool, Indoor Halls, Cycling Velodrome, Squash Courts, Conditioning Units, Hockey Fields (Grass & synthetic), Athletic Track (Cinder & synthetic) & Out Door Courts. For the recovery of players well maintained Sauna Bath, Steam Bath and Hydrotherapy facilities are available.

It is the only govt. college of physical education in Punjab which offers all the courses in physical education. This college started its journey from Mountessary Park Lahore in 1940. To fulfill the requirement of physical education, a six month course was started at Tara Devi. In 1952 the college was shifted to Ropar and finally it was shifted at Patiala in 1958. In the year 2005, college was renamed as Prof. Gursewak Singh Govt. College of Physical Education. Prof. Gursewak Singh was a great sportsperson, eminent educationist and good administrator.
